The Greenfield airport, spread over 5,000 acres, is being built at Sriperambudur should be named after Chief Minister and DMK supreme M Karunanidhi popularly referred to as Kalaignar. He holds the record of winning every election that he fought in his political career spanning over 60 years and is known for his knowledge in and contribution for Tamil literature.
I second this idea. A Leader who has served 60 odd years in the Political field and known to be the senior most Leader in the whole of India should be honoured. Dr. Kalaingar has brought in CLASSIC status for Tamil Language, we Tamilian should fight for honouring him with a GREEN FIELD AIRPORT named after him. LONG LIVE DR. Kalaingnar. Let us name the Green Field Airport as DR. KALAINGAR INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT (Dr. Kalaignar Pannattu vimana nilayam)
Green Field airport is the only thing that can hold the traffic development of Chennai Airport on a long run. The name Dr. Kalainger International Airport is perfect for the Green Field airport as he is the one behind the whole plan. We look forward to see DR. KALAINGER INERNATIONAL AIRPORT soon.
Considering the demands of air traffic in Chennai in the coming years, a greenfield airport should be set up. I heard that the number of domestic passengers in Chennai airport had gone up by 10% in 2006-2007 compared to the previous year and international passengers by 38%. Also the cargo handled was two lakh tonnes, 13 per cent higher than in 2005-2006. If this is true then in the next five years, demands of air traffic in Chennai are expected to go up further. So, definitely the existing airport may not be able to meet the demand. Even if the 1000 acres would be made available by acquiring land north of the airport for the expansion of the existing airport at a cost of over Rs.1000 crore, the facility would reach saturation point in seven-eight years. Hence, the Government should consider whether the existing airport should be expanded or a new airport set up as long-term strategy. "Certain forces" that are evincing "huge interest" in Chennai airport expansion work must think about nation's development, people's welfare and Chennai's progress. Our Chief Minister DR. KALAINGAR, whether he is in government or Opposition, will work for country's development and honestly discharge his duties. Let us hope that Kalaignar will also thrust aside the expansion and carry on Greenfield.

Not a bad Idea. Whatever the name of the Airport might be. Chennai will have a Green Field Airport as our other neighbouring states.
